The History of Sydmouth Valley

The first European exploration west of the point reached by Blaxland, Wentworth and Lawson on their crossing of the Blue Mountains was led by surveyor George William Evans. In 1815, William Cox constructed the road through Bathurst and named the property Sydmouth Valley.

The homestead was built by Robert Lowe in 1825 on a grant of 2,000 acres. Constructed by convict craftsmen, the house follows classic Georgian styling, with hand-made bricks, cedar joinery, and original architectural features still evident today.

Over the decades, the property passed through generations, with the Webb family acquiring Sydmouth Valley in the late 1800s. The cellar, orchard, and many original rooms remain as they were more than a century ago — offering a rare glimpse into early rural Australian life.

Today, Sydmouth Valley stands as one of the region’s most charming examples of preserved heritage living.
